The Dance

In a crowded room, they sat on opposite sofas. The voices and laughter of people merged with the faint music in the background. She was sitting in silence. His ghost stood up and asked her to dance. She refused, but he assured her that no eyes would see, for people don’t see through souls.

He took her hands and stood up in the middle of the room while people walked through them. The music was getting louder, and the voices were fading away; the laughter stopped, and only their souls were dancing in that living room, as no one saw. She stood up from her chair as she vanished between the arms of his ghost. He was back again—in the laughter that brought him no joy and in the talk that he couldn’t be any less careless about.
