Miserably Alone

He who shall take my heart and feast upon
Would only feel the bitter taste of woe
For I have been a lonely tearful pawn
No friend, no lover, even as I grew

A single soul roaming this grey sad earth
I long for an embrace to hug away
The worry. And make me feel I am worth
Loving. Since I am frail, made out of clay

Yet, forsaken I find myself to be
Banished, in a deserted island of
broken dreams. An abandoned sick tree
I was, tired and detached like a cursed dove

Oh, what life am I forced and pushed to live?
I see no God to bribe, no gifts to give

So Alone

You could have been my happy ever after

Me and you were more than a disaster

You made me rich with all that love

You made me lose my inner soul from way above

I was trying my best to understand this mystery

Because I was causing my heart too much misery

I wish you could see the pain that I have been through

I wish you did not stray from the walkway that I drew

Now I am so alone, so alone, so alone

Tired of making you mine, oh you locked me in a zone

I heard that you gave the best of me to someone else

I heard you are happy and you made it for yourself

I can’t feel the joy because you took from me the summer

Then you drowned me in a foggy winter to make me a runner

Without you, I am a torn sail in a swirling wind

You left me broken, shattered without a single hint

You took our love and you put it in the shroud

Now I am alone and I can’t fight back loud

I wish he could keep loving you the way I did

My soul is aching the pain to forbid

You went indifferent and cut me down

Now I am so alone with the hating color brown

Palestine, My Heart, By Anwar BelAfia

The Day You Will Leave – Sonnet

This love that we crave feels like summer,

Made my heart as wide as the see,

My head a blurry world, such a dumber

And my eyes blinded by the ineffable sun at high degree

That Adrenaline devastating my fragile body, numb feeling

Butterflies in my stomach crawling back to you,

Paralyzed lake whose waves exhale a soft whispering

Under the whip of the wind saying, I only love you.

Then, when yellow leaves are detaching hardly from trees

Some pieces of me still hang upon you forever.

Can’t you hear my crying soul saying please,

Begging you to stay, to stay together,

Cold silence between us, that I give in, overcome by an invincible tear,

Only holding you tight and missing you my dear.

To the Good Old Days

To the good old days,

When my only worry was to go to bed at nine, on time.

When stealing candy was my only crime,

When I used to count weeks, waiting for holidays.

When my smile used to be a present for everyone,

When depression never knocked my door,

When I used to wake up late and have pancakes with the TV on,

When I used to go barefoot on the floor.

When everyone seemed to be friend,

Oh, naïve kid! The world is unfair,

Never thought it would be the end,

For such celestial memories, so rare.

I remember, I remember,

When war was just a stubborn man full of anger,

When pain was not a broken glass of wine,

Saying I am fine.

I remember, I remember,

When death was not a cold season taking loved ones every December,

When love was a gentleman handing a pure red rose to his wife,

That now, faded with sharp thorns, will give you trauma for the rest of your life.

Colors of My Ink

I poured ink onto a page this morning,

A Tyrian purple, from empires of old

For the fine silks chosen heirs are born in

And heavy crowns only the worthy may hold.

I poured ink onto a page this morning

A crimson red, like a splatter of blood

For ruthless battles and fires burning

As death looms and graves wait to be dug.

I poured ink onto a page this morning,

A cerulean blue, like the depths of the sea

For spilled tears and lonely hearts drowning

In a grief that refuses to let them free.

I poured ink onto a page this morning,

An obsidian black, like a night without stars

For every hope lost, every heart in mourning,

Every fallen hero the poets will never sing about.

I poured ink onto a page this morning,

A viridian green, like nature coming to life

For hope reborn and a new beginning

For weary souls that endured a too-long strife.

I poured ink onto a page this morning,

A blossom pink, like a child’s blush of glee,

For a love that heals and dreams soaring,

For a future in which all can believe.

I poured ink onto a page this morning

In every color flowing through my heart;

For every new tale, rising and growing,

Giving life to a sprout of art.

I Wish I had an Older Brother by Fatima Chaabani

A kind brother with a wide neck, so strong,
I longed for a cordial embrace so tight.
For one to assure a heart void of wrong,

To stretch mountains for a light beyond sight.

For their own kind around fails to trouble
You, allowed to flourish in their presence.
Arms you bear around their vastness crumble,
Smells of gardenia soften their essence.

But my devine mother shields wind with grace,
Footsteps light as feathers show me the way.
Sisterly ardor mends a staircase graze,
Feminine is the breeze that carries May.

A kind brother, I would have died to face,

Holding mother’s same eyes in tender play.

Madness in Black: A Sonnet for Razia

In her cloak of black, she conceals a wicked soul, Razia,
the queen of twisted, grisly tales.
With books so dark, they make the bravest pale,
And movies where screams and blood take their toll.

Her mind is a labyrinth of the unknown,
A twisted maze where fear and terror reign.
Her eyes ablaze with madness so profound,
She seems a creature caught in a fearsome dream.

But in her madness, I have found my bliss,
Drawn to her in ways I cannot explain.
Her mind a dark abyss I long to kiss.

She is the moonless night, I cannot miss,
A black rose in a garden overgrown,
The darkness in my soul I will not save.

My Chikha Nezha

In her hips, my Chikha’s grace takes hold,
Nezha moves to the beat with such finesse,
Her rhythmic sway, a story to be told,
Each step and turn a marvel to impress.

She never misses a beat or falls behind,
Each motion a true work of art and heart,
A legacy of dance she’s left behind,
A lasting memory, never to depart.

I watch in awe, as she takes the floor,
Enraptured by her every single move,
For in my eyes, she’s worth so much more,
A treasure trove of love I will always prove.

And though she’s not my lover, that’s true,
Darling mother, my admiration for you endures anew
