A Tradition of Killing

I want to flee free beyond the ocean’s rim from my dreary past…“Mommy, what do you do for a living?” my 3-year-old daughter Anna asked out of the blue. My eyes widened. “Umm, well, each day I have a new job” I answered with a cracked voice. I certainly know where this is going. “Why do you have multiple jobs, mommy?” She keeps questioning and I could hear my blood vessels rushing through my sweaty body. “You have to learn something sweety, not all people have good hearts, some people envy my multi-skills and want to get revenge, that’s all. But you don’t have to worry about it because I have it under control” I answered with a relieved and tentative smile as I pressed a gentle kiss on her forehead. Thank god! It was very early in the morning. The streets were blank and barren and I was driving towards the cemetery to hide my clues as usual. I could hear the sound of the raindrops clashing against my car’s window shield. As soon as I get out of the car, I bundled up and a cold snap slapped my sleepy face. It was hard to dig because the earth’s crust was covered like a blanket of snow. Finished my task in less than 30 minutes as per routine.

As soon as I get home, I started preparing meat steaks that I had brought for my beloved Anna. From her facial expressions, I could say that she enjoyed her meal. My heart sighed out of relief because I cooked a different type of meat today. Suddenly, she catechized “Mommy, where is daddy?” “He is in the garden darling.” She looked out of the window, “mommy, but there is no one in the garden?” “Dig a little in the garden and you’ll find him” I answered with a venomous smile and a cold heart in the cold winter. I want to flee free beyond the ocean’s rim from my dreary past…
