Part VII: <\/span><\/b>At Sea<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After boarding onto the ship, all captives were led below deck for confinement. In total, over six hundred slaves packed like spoons in extremely tight spaces, with no wiggle room. For several weeks, many slaves died where they laid. Some were taken by injury while others perished because of thirst, hunger, disease or exhaustion. Often, their bodies were left to decay for multiple days before they would allow couple of slaves to throw them overboard. The stench of death and excrement gave off a particular, sickly-sweet odour. Kaya Maga who was able to taste the smell of decomposition every time he inhaled, ironically felt most comfortable during the process of throwing out the corpses. He would take the opportunity to breathe some fresh air.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On one occasion, Kaya Maga was tasked with other slaves to empty the hull of dead body. To his great surprise, Sembema had survived the great battle and was on the same ship with him. Seeing the strongest man he knew being treated as a retched dog broke his heart and resolve. He calmly approached stumbling Sembema without raising suspicion and whispered to him;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f \u201cHow are you my friend\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In disbelief, Sembema with his swollen face started to weep and snivel. While Kaya Maga continued.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f \u201cThey told me you were dead, how are you here?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f \u201cWhat happened to you?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Quickly regaininghis composure, Sembema hardly able to talk managed to utter a few words:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f \u201cI am sorry my lord, for I have failed you.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f \u201cThe battle was over before it started.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey were expecting us and used much better weapons, so we were quickly destroyed.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f \u201cMany brave men died.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI survived because the white general decided to sell me into slavery.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI sustained multiple injuries during the fight and trip to the coast.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing that sustained me was the thought of seeing you again my emperor.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Moved by such touching confession Kaya Maga with a smile reacted by holding his arm tight and murmured in his ears.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Seeing the approaching guard, Kaya Maga stepped back and lowered his head to avoid raising suspicion. Looking back, he winked at Sembema before they made their way below deck accompanied by the armed guard.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Below deck, Kaya Maga recalled seeing an unchained black women. She was carrying a big platter with cups filled with drinks. She must have been there to help with the cooking, cleaning and anything else they required. Her intriguing frame reminded him of the time he met his betrothed in the throne room. Although her face was hidden on that day, he could make out her perfectly divine body and knew no two people could have had the same appearance. However, he had to make sure by speaking with her.
