I can never say it out loud, but god every time I look at each of my own grandkids, I can see the enemy!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They speak better French than the French, only adding sprinkles of Darija whenever they need to address me. They wear skirts and suits, and I wear my old-fashioned Ngab and\u202f\u202fJellaba.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They use forks to eat Rfissa, and I am the only one who can still cook Rfissa. I call them \u201cwlidati\u201d, and they call me \u201cMami\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What does Mami even mean? Is it French, English, or Arab? Or is it just like us, none and all at the same time?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I wonder why wouldn\u2019t they call me \u201cMima\u201d just\u202f\u202flike real Moroccans\u202f\u202faddressed their mothers during the good old days?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It would be a minor word switch for them, but it would mean the world to me.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who am I? Who\u2019s the Moroccan and who\u2019s the intruder? Is neither of us Moroccan or are we both Moroccan?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re both facing an identity crisis. Mine is lonely, theirs is unconscious.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
